The Beach Haus sits on Rasta Beach, at the north end of La Ventana bay.

The water’s 30 meters from the door, across white sand. The house is set slightly above beach level, so you get the full view of the bay and nobody walking the beach is looking into your living room.

It sleeps 8, and 10 if you need it.

Wind season, November to April

Rasta Beach is one of the best launches in the bay, and it’s right out the door. Wide sand, clean side-shore wind, room to lay out lines, and it doesn’t get crowded the way the beaches south of here do.

The wind comes down the channel between the mainland and Isla Cerralvo, straight across the bay in front of the house. It fills in around 11:00 AM most days and holds until 5:00 or so. Mornings are usually flat and glassy, which is when people paddle, swim or take a kayak out before the first session.

This is also where the downwinder starts. Launch here and ride about 7 km down the bay to South Beach. Most people sort their own ride back.

Gear storage is lockable and sits below the bedrooms. Board racks, hooks, a pump area, and an outdoor shower right at the door for the rinse-off.

Kite Surfing Planet is next door for lessons, and they run a full restaurant and bar.

Wind season

Summer, May to October

Summer’s a different trip entirely. The wind’s gone, the water warms into the high 80s, and the bay fills with people who came for what’s under the surface.

Diving, fishing and ocean safaris all run out of La Ventana. Boats pick up right in front of the house, so you walk 30 meters and you’re aboard.

May through July is mobula season. Thousands of rays moving together, and getting in the water with them is why a lot of people come. Dolphins, whale sharks and mantas through the season, and a full day out to La Reina for the sea lion colony.

Orcas move through this bay, and it’s one of very few places in the world where getting in the water with them is legal, through licensed operators under a permitted program. Sightings are never guaranteed. When it happens, you’ll remember it.

Summer

Hot Springs Beach

0.25 mi north there’s an undeveloped bay with hot springs running up through the sand.

People walk to the north end, pile up the pebbles into a tub the size they want, and sit in it while the water comes up warm underneath. Late afternoon on the right tide is when it happens.

Bring a beer. It’s one of those things people do here every trip.

The house

2 bedrooms. The master has a king. The second room has teak built-in bunks, 2 queens below and 2 twins above. Each bedroom has a full bath, and there’s a half bath on the living side.

A/C in every room and Starlink throughout, so you can work from here if you have to.

The kitchen’s built for cooking. High-end range, dishwasher, wine fridge. Washer and dryer for the salt and the sand.

Outside there’s a plunge pool that seats 6, an outdoor fireplace, and parking on site. The pool heats to 104°F and chills to 50°F, so it works in any season.

Getting here

Town’s about 1 mi. The supermarket’s 0.5 mi.

4WD is highly recommended. The last 1.5 km is dirt, then a turn into an arroyo, 200 meters along the beach, and up the driveway.
